Apple, specifically the iPod, sucks pachyderm cloacas!
About a year ago I bought an iPod shuffle in a moment of weakness.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth went on continuously after that, everytime I tried to put music on my iPod from Linux.

Things got a bit easier when I got this Windows job, suddenly I could use iTunes!

But wait, I have two work laptops, and I've stopped using the other one on a regular basis.

So I just installed iTunes on this other work laptop, and iTunes will only let me ERASE the iPod if I want to put more music on the player!

Let me reiterate this to myself... I do not control the hardware I purchase, the manufacturers get to tell me how I can use the things I buy. This is not my hardware, it was just a donation to Apple, and they loaned me a dangerous device that must be kept under strict control.

No wait... Digital Restrictions Management is where customers are treated as criminals.

I will never again buy hardware from Apple, and I'll do my very best to never fund Digital Restrictions again.

That's why I use GNUpod and never use iTunes. It's also why my iPod Nano is packed full of free and legal downloads.

I've never had any success with any of the iPod tools in debian.
Do you have to do something special to make them work?

Alas, the details vary. I've just upgraded from Kubuntu 7.04 to 8.04. I quickly found that my iPod is no longer automatically recognised when I plug it in. Mind you, 6.10 didn't automatically recognised it either. Anyway, it was easy to restore my old Automounter iPod config line and update the shell var that points to my iPod mount point.

What you describe is exactly why I've been buying MP3's from Amazon.com. I'm on XP, so I don't know about their download manager, but once you get the file, its just a plain ole straight up 256kbit MP3.

Since I've discovered this, I've spent more money on music in the past 3 months than the 3 years prior. Vote with your wallet, that's what I'm doing :)

Red Chair Software makes their living producing saner interfaces with more-or-less locked down mp3-player platforms.

Their Anapod http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ is not all bad.

I originally bought a Shuffle way back when also, but it broke fairly quickly and easily. I'm not very impressed with Apple products these days.
However, I bought an iRiver S10 afterwards and it has worked like a charm without any issues whatsoever. Bonus is that it supports .ogg.
